Demographic Shifts in Atlanta
This project examines demographic shifts in Atlanta, focusing on the distribution of new residents by race from 1990 to 2020. Despite metro-Atlanta's shift to a minority-majority population, Atlanta itself has seen an influx of white residents, altering its historical Black-majority status.
Using ArcGIS Pro, I analyzed census tract data from the Atlanta Regional Commission to map total population changes and racial distribution shifts over time. Bivariate maps highlighted distinct trends: white population growth was concentrated in east Atlanta, while Black population changes were more dispersed, with fewer high-growth areas.
Further spatial analysis included Moran’s I Summary and Hot Spot Analysis, identifying statistically significant clusters of growth. Results showed high-confidence hot spots for white population increases in east Atlanta, while cold spots for Black residents appeared in mid-west to east Atlanta, suggesting broader socio-economic impacts.
